Crystal16 and Crystalline PV are used by Leeds University Consortium

17 October 2010, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Crystal16® and Crystalline PVTM will be used at the University of Leeds in a research program entitled “Process Integration and Product Enhancement Through Crystal Growth Modifiers”.  This program is aimed at the development of CGM (crystal growth modifier) technology that can make a step change in manufacturing competitiveness in the production of solid form pharmaceuticals and speciality chemicals.

The consortium consisting of the Institute of Process Research & Development (iPRD), Avantium and partners in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries is supported by a grant from the British government-backed Technology Strategy Board.  “This research program will lead to rigorous process development, robust start-up, confidence in meeting registration and hopefully shorter time to delivering products to market.” said Prof. John Blacker, project co-ordinator, and Director of the iPRD.

Amongst other aspects of PR&D, the iPRD are experts in morphology modelling, crystallisation processing, molecular modelling and process control.  They will be using the Crystalline PVTM to measure the real-time effect of CGM’s on crystal growth.  “The real time imaging of the Crystalline PV, in combination with precise control over the reaction conditions, will enable the rapid discovery of potent modifiers including early quantification of their impact on process and product performance.” said Prof. Xue Wang.

The Crystal16®, medium throughput crystallizer has the ability to cover a wide range of heat/cooling rates, and is good for solubility and dissolution studies; moreover can operate on as little as 0.5 mg of sample, per reaction.  According to Prof. Kevin Roberts “The ability to screen small volumes of samples on the Crystal16 will enable us to identify effects and conditions which alleviate or increase the effect of CGM’s on crystal growth rapidly.”

“The researchers at the University of Leeds are leaders in their field and we are very enthusiastic about the preliminary results we have seen” commented Dr. Anita Coetzee, Director of Systems development at Avantium.
