Crystallization Process Optimization
The bulk properties of a powder can have a huge impact on the downstream processing properties (filterability, dryability, flowability, etc.) or formulation (bulk density, impurities, etc) of a drug substance.
Avantium has the right systems and equipment to help its customers understand and control crystallization processes. In a typical project, Avantium's team use the Crystal16™ system to measure solubility and obtain a first insight into the compound's crystallization behavior (meta stable zone width). A larger scale reactor system (50 mL) is then used to identify the parameters that influence the property of interest and consequently to construct a response surface model using the dominant parameters in the process. Finally, the designed recipe is verified through a scale-up to 600 mL. In this way, customers gain insight into how to improve yield, control particle size and shape, reduce process time, etc.
Following a process optimization project, customers may choose for a full scale-up study based on a combination of mechanistic and empirical modeling.
We work closely with our customers' process development or pilot plant groups in order to optimize the relevance and effectiveness of the research project and to facilitate the technology transfer afterwards.
