Based upon its track record and expertise in the energy, chemicals and pharmaceutical industries, Avantium has established two major development programs in order to leverage its proprietary high-throughput R&D technology. The company intends to team up with leading players in the field with a view to fine-tuning those programs and developing and commercializing its inventions.

Avantium develops products, processes and technology in the area of biofuels and bio-based chemicals and pharmaceutical crystal forms.

Biofuels and bio-based chemicals program

Avantium develops second-generation biofuels and catalytic processes to allow for efficient production of new biofuels and bio-based chemicals. The company aims to develop biofuels with superior properties and process economics compared to existing biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel. These biofuels have significant disadvantages that prevent them from being used on a large scale. Avantium's ultimate goal is to develop a next-generation biofuel that can compete with fossil-based fuels.

Pharmaceutical program

Avantium develops new crystal forms of existing, patented drugs (whose safety and efficacy have been proven). These crystal forms have the potential of extending the drug's product lifecycle and of commercializing a second-generation version of the drug with improved properties. This should allow for more convenient dosage formulations and therapies for patients.
