Solid State Research

For almost ten years now, Avantium Pharma has been providing services to leading pharmaceutical companies worldwide. Customers include nearly all of the top 20 global pharma companies. The performance of thorough and sophisticated solid state research for the pharmaceutical industry is highly relevant. Indeed, 80 percent of all drug substances are formulated in solid-dosage forms.

Avantium's solid state research services span multiple stages of the drug development lifecycle. Already in an early, preclinical stage polymorph screening and salt screening services can assist in identifying the optimal solid form for a given compound to be used for further development and clinical trials. For compounds that are difficult to crystallize, alternative routes can be investigated such as co-crystallization and stabilization of the amorphous form. Typically during phase II clinical trials, increased attention is placed on enhancing patent protection. Comprehensive screening programs are the basis for a successful patent strategy and potential patent extension. Parallel to (pre)clinical drug development, the crystallization process is developed and optimized with regard to for example yield, particle size and/or bulk density to facilitate processing and formulation.

Avantium's research programs are undertaken in close cooperation with the customer. Frequent contacts, effective and timely communication, comprehensive and clear periodic reports, and an electronic report including all raw data ensure optimal information transfer between the project team and the customer before, during and at the end of each program.
