bio-MEG Proeffabriek

Plant-based MEG (mono-ethylene glycol) Demonstration Plant

More Info

What is bio-MEG Proeffabriek?

Europa om de Hoek is an European Innovation Counsel initiative investing in top-class innovators, entrepreneurs, small companies and scientists with bright ideas and the ambition to scale up internationally. One of the projects bio-MEG focuses on scaling up Avantium’s innovative Mekong technology, which converts renewable raw materials (1G and 2G sugars) into bio mono-ethylene glycol (bio-MEG). MEG is a building block mainly used in the production of everyday consumer goods, such as PET and PEF plastics and polyester textiles, etc.

The objectives of the project is to open a demonstration bio-MEG plant in order to scale up the novel technology, validate the technical and economic feasibility of the process, and to collect data to execute an environmental life-cycle analysis (LCA) quantifying the sustainability benefits of the Avantium technology.

This project fits in perfectly with the long-term vision for the Northern Netherlands that focuses on innovation and sustainable, green chemistry, as also described in the Eemsdelta Industry Agenda. The production of bio-MEG is already outlined as one of the important development factors, and the reduced CO2 emissions compared to the production of fossil MEG makes its impact even greater. Moreover, bio-MEG contributes strongly to the future of the bio-based economy in the Northern Netherlands by:

  • Using sugars from local agriculture products
  • Adding value to the development, knowledge, and expertise at the Chemport Industry Campus (“ZAPXL”), and fulfilling the desire for adding industrial pilot scale facilities at the site.
  • Strengthening the long-term relationship between Avantium and the RUG (Heeres research group) in the field of sugar chemistry.
  • Aligning with Avantium’s, DAWN technology present at Chemie Park Delfzijl, which extracts industrial sugars from wood chips and can be later used in the Mekong process.
  • Contributing to the regional development plan to use substantial quantities of locally produced green hydrogen, green energy, and industry collaborations.
