bio-MEG Proeffabriek

Plant-based MEG (mono-ethylene glycol) Demonstration Plant

Bio-MEG Proeffabriek is a grant project supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through Samenwerkingsverband Noord Nederland (SNN). Its objective is to support the building of a demonstration plant that will scale-up the integrated plant-based MEG production to 11 ton/year, which allows for techno-economic scale-up and evaluation of the process in addition to producing relevant sample quantities of product to support downstream validation in at least three applications, collecting of data to conduct a third-party environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) and preparation for scale-up to industrial size commercial plants.

MEG is a key monomer in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene furanoate (PEF) plastics. In addition to plant-based MEG, this demonstration plant will also produce plant-based MPG.

The next phase after this project is to deploy a RAY commercial flagship plant with a strategic partner. Target customers of this flagship plant will primarily be polyethylene terephthalate (PET) producers.
